A tragic fire incident engulfed the busy shopping mall, Gul Plaza, in Karachi, Pakistan. It took more than 25 lives and injured over 60 people. Gul Plaza was considered one of the busiest shopping malls in Karachi, where items related to weddings, children, home appliances, and utensils were sold. There was always a rush of people in the mall whenever anyone visited the place. People from all backgrounds came there to shop for festivals. During the wedding season, it was always crowded with shoppers.

Unfortunately, the mall recently caught fire, which spread from one shop to another and ultimately covered the entire ground floor. It gave very little time to people to take a conscious decision and escape from the burning mall. Some were fortunate enough to run out, while others were trapped inside. Initially, people tried to put out the fire using their own limited resources, but it spread rapidly and went out of control.

Firefighters arrived and began their rescue operation, but the flames intensified with each passing hour. During the rescue efforts, one rescue officer lost his life. The weak external structure of the mall collapsed, unable to withstand the intense heat. After a long struggle, the fire was finally brought under control. Rescue teams then moved inside to search for survivors, but by then, it appeared that all hopes had faded.

This is not the first such incident in Karachi. We have witnessed similar tragedies in different parts of the city, resulting in the loss of many lives and extensive property damage. After every incident, there is a huge outcry for a short time, which gradually fades until another tragedy strikes. The irony is that the government announces big promises after every incident. People know these promises are temporary and often false, yet they still believe them and move on.

Fire Incidents are very frequent in Karachi (Millennium Mall fire incident 2025)

This fire incident was also not new for Gul Plaza. It had faced a similar incident before. Fortunately, at that time, the fire was not as intense and was controlled quickly. However, no lessons were learned from that incident, and the continued negligence eventually led to this massive loss of life and property.

Everyone in Karachi is now asking the same question: why did it happen? So far, investigations have revealed that the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA), whose primary responsibility is to ensure compliance with building rules and regulations in Karachi, failed to perform its duties. The building was constructed for approximately 1,000 shops, but the actual number exceeded this limit, which congested the passageways and trapped people inside during the fire.

Secondly, the completion certificate of the building was also issued illegally. It is quite obvious that this incident was not the result of a single day’s negligence; it had been developing for a long time, while authorities remained least concerned. The building had no proper fire exit system. The doors were not adequately accessible. There was chaos inside the market, with shopkeepers illegally occupying passageways. There was neither a fire alarm nor any fire extinguishing system. The entire structure was standing on a time bomb, yet nobody bothered to address it. Several families lost their loved ones due to this negligence.

What should be done now? Inspection with no mercy. Authorities must keep in mind that nothing is more important than human life. Strict enforcement of rules and regulations is the only way to prevent such incidents in the future. This requires stern behavior, strong commitment, and tough decisions, but there is no alternative.

Even a little flexibility creates loopholes, which multiply over time and eventually result in a broken system. If strict compliance is enforced even for a year, people will realize that such incidents can be controlled. Once that realization sets in, people will begin to follow the rules themselves. Otherwise, false hopes bring no benefit. They may calm the situation temporarily, but they offer no long-term solution.
